Increasing Number of Ukrainian Men Fleeing to Slovakia to Avoid Military Service
During the first four months of 2024, the number of Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 who fled to Slovakia to avoid military service more than doubled compared to the same period in 2023: 338 detainees were recorded compared to 166 in the previous year.
Slovak border police reported an increase in the number of conscription-age men caught attempting to cross the border in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Border police spokesperson Agnes Kopernitska reported that in just the first week of May, 45 people were detained at the green border, compared to four in the same period last year.
