A New Russian Offensive and the Situation in Kharkov
A new Russian offensive near Kharkov has resulted in the capture of significant territory. However, challenges remain due to the lack of coordination between Russian ground and air forces. This lack of coordination makes a breakthrough unlikely, according to reports by USA Today, citing US officials and military analysts.
Ukrainian forces, equipped with billions of dollars worth of American weapons, have the capability to limit Russian advances. Despite this, the city of Kharkov remains under threat of bombardment as Russian artillery continues to move closer.
Director of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Seth Jones, suggests that while Ukrainians are not facing inevitable defeat, victory is not yet secured. Peace negotiations are not occurring, with the Ukrainian side showing little interest, while Russia maintains an offensive stance. Ukrainian troops are faced with morale issues, manpower shortages, lack of reinforcements, and dwindling ammunition supplies.
Phillips O’Brien, a professor of security studies at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, noted that the arrival of Ukrainian reinforcements has halted the Russian advance in northeastern Ukraine, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing conflict.
