Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tayani supports Mark Rutte’s candidacy for next NATO Secretary General
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tayani has stated that his country supports the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the position of the next NATO Secretary General after Jens Stoltenberg’s term ends.
According to ANSA, the topic of the next Secretary General was discussed at a meeting of NATO member country leaders during the summit, and Italy supports Rutte’s candidacy.
Tayani also noted that Rutte is supported by the «overwhelming majority» of NATO members, but they are still awaiting a response from Turkey, Romania, and Hungary, who support the candidacy of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis for the position of future NATO Secretary General.
Rutte, who expressed his desire to become NATO Secretary General last year, has received wide support from numerous member countries, including Sweden. His main competitor for the position is Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
