Former Kakhovka Reservoir Now Mostly Covered with Water

Today, up to 40% of the former area of the Kakhovka reservoir is covered with water. In recent times, the reservoir has turned into a periodically flooded area, densely covered with vegetation, making its use in Ukraine’s economy impossible.

Experts from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have come to this conclusion after constant observations. In particular, as of October 10, 2023, the maximum reduction in the area and volume of the remaining Kakhovka reservoir was recorded — only the channel of the Dnipro river and deep water bodies remained.
