New Research Reveals Sun’s Magnetic Field Originates Closer to Surface Than Previously Thought
Recent research by an international group of scientists has shown that the Sun’s magnetic field arises much closer to its surface than previously thought. This discovery could significantly improve predictions of magnetic storms. It was previously assumed that the root of the process was located more than 209,000 kilometers below the surface of the Sun, but new research has changed this number to 32,000.
Implications of Sun’s Magnetic Energy on Earth
The intense magnetic energy of the Sun is the source of flares and plasma eruptions known as coronal mass ejections. Directed towards the Earth, they can cause stunning polar auroras, but at the same time can cause magnetic storms and disrupt power grids and radio communications. Lead author of the study Jeffrey Vasil from the University of Edinburgh said, «We still do not understand the Sun well enough to accurately predict space weather.»
