British Duchess Sophie Visits Ukraine in Solidarity
British Duchess Sophie made history as the first member of the British royal family to visit Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022. Representing the UK Foreign Office, she expressed solidarity with those affected by the war during her one-day visit.
The Duchess paid tribute to the victims in Bucha and met with survivors of sexual violence and torture. She highlighted the devastating impact of conflict on women and girls, who often bear the highest burden of suffering.
Sophie also visited a city devastated by fighting and met with children who were forcibly taken to Russia by occupiers and later returned to Ukraine.
During a private meeting with President Zelenskyy and First Lady Zelenska, the Duchess delivered a message from King Charles and discussed support for victims of sexual violence during conflicts.
King Charles III had previously shown support for Ukrainians, praising their strength and resilience in the fight for freedom. As Prince of Wales, he visited Ukrainian refugees in Romania in 2022.
