A brown bear spotted in the Chernobyl Biosphere Reserve
A large predator, a brown bear, has been sighted within the territory of the Chernobyl Biosphere Reserve. The reserve’s Facebook page recently shared photos of the bear captured in camera traps.
Representatives of the reserve have confirmed that the brown bear has been living in the area for a few years, with evidence from previous camera trap images. Despite the exclusion zone, the bear was also captured on camera last year.
Further confirming the bear’s presence, scientists discovered traces of the animal in the Opachychi nature reserve department. A spruce tree with bark stripped by bear claws and fur stuck on the resinous tree trunk were found, with the fur sent for analysis. Camera traps have been set up in the area as a precaution in case the bear returns.
