The Power of Asteroids: A Threat to Modern Civilization
During the time when a giant asteroid fell to Earth, forming the Chicxulub crater, the dinosaurs received no warning. If a similar event were to happen today, the impact wave, with a power exceeding that of a hydrogen bomb by 2 million times, would destroy forests, cities, and cause tsunamis, ScienceAlert reports.
Cities that survived the first impact wave would be destroyed by subsequent earthquakes with a magnitude of 10. After that, clouds of hot dust and ash would absorb sunlight, plunging the planet into an icy darkness.
However, unlike the dinosaurs, modern humanity would be aware of the impending danger and possibly could prevent it.
NASA’s Planetary Defense Mission
NASA has tasked the Office of Planetary Defense Coordination with tracking and assessing the risks associated with dangerous asteroids in the Solar System.
