Egyptian authorities have decided to restore one of the main pyramids in Giza, which has caused outrage among scientists worldwide. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt, officials want to reconstruct the original appearance of Pharaoh Menkaure’s pyramid – the latest of the three main pyramids in Giza.
Originally, the pyramid was roughly one-third of its height covered in red Aswan granite. However, over time, more than half of the casing has disappeared. As part of the reconstruction project, which Egypt plans to implement jointly with Japan over three years, they plan to restore the granite casing using blocks found at the base of the pyramid. It is believed that these blocks are the missing casing, presumably fallen and left lying at the base.
However, the project of the Egyptian authorities has been met with mixed reactions on social media. Under the videos showing the preparation process for reconstruction, users left outraged comments and suggested «straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa» and putting wallpaper on the pyramids.
