The European Union’s Stance on Russian LNG
The European Union is preparing for the possible introduction of sanctions against Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), although it currently does not plan to restrict the import of conventional natural gas from Russia.
This was stated by the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, after talks with the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenko, RBC-Ukraine correspondent reports.
«The gas package, for which the European Parliament voted last month, will come into force later this month and will provide the opportunity to restrict Russian ships’ access to energy resource supplies to Europe,» explained Simson.
In April, the European Parliament approved a number of provisions that will allow EU countries to prohibit the import of Russian LNG.
According to the new rules, European governments will be able to temporarily block Russian and Belarusian exporters’ access to bidding for contracts for gas and LNG supplies to Europe.
